About Us

The first group of floorball players in Wellington started playing in 2008 and met once a week in the Wellington Girls College gym for a training. The small group of enthusiasts quickly grew and the first ever Wellington Open Floorball Tournament was held in October 2008 at the Kilbirnie Rec Centre. The club was officially set up as an incorporated society on 1st April 2009 during a training session and was the first floorball club in New Zealand to be incorporated.

In September 2009 a Floorball Development Seminar was held in Wellington with support from the International Floorball Federation. This served as a kick start to set up Floorball New Zealand with strong representation from the Wellington club also on the national organisation.

The first social league started at the beginning of 2010 with five teams. In term 4 of the same year, the first junior league was held after an earlier junior tournament was very successful and clearly indicated that schools are keen to play floorball.

In September 2011 most of the activities were moved into the new ASB Sports Centre and for the first time a full size floorball rink was available in Wellington. With the move to the new venue, the sport was suddenly exposed to a wider audience and numbers continued to grow constantly.

Participation in floorball has grown massively since then - as of 2023, there are 40 teams in the Sunday social league, 93 teams taking part in school leagues, and a competitive Wellington Floorball League for those wanting to play at a higher level.

The Wellington Floorball Open tournament is our yearly highlight and attracts teams from all over New Zealand, Australia, and even Singapore. It is the larges and longest running floorball tournament in New Zealand.
